Autism for Caregivers

Autism means I miss what others catch, and I catch what others miss!

Children with autism develop all kinds of enthusiasm…perhaps focusing on one topic gives the child a sense of control, predictability, and security in a world that can be unpredictable and feel scary.” – Barry M. Prizant.

It can be overwhelming for a parent or a caregiver to deal with the beautiful ASD children, especially when a meltdown or a tantrum occurs, therefore Tawahdna helps caregivers to understand the emotions of their children and provides tools for how to communicate emotionally. Furthermore, we aim to shift the parental/caregiver dynamic from giving orders to spending more quality time and allowing the child to initiate and lead interactions for a more enriching experience.

We initiated level 1 cohorts in four different locations around Irbid city; in Adria School, in Latin School Kindergarten and World Associates. These Cohorts aimed to equip parents, caregivers and students with evidence-based practices and tools. Each cohort consisted of 6 sessions. Additionally, we conducted home visits for families who participated in the level 1 cohort.

Last but not least, here’s a story from one of the caregivers: “It was my dream for my son (11 years old) to completely stop using diapers. I managed to visit my relatives in Zarqa city, and for the first time, he went out with us without a diaper for three days, and thankfully, he didn't have any accidents. We established a signal between us for bathroom use, and he used it. Thankfully, he also stopped sleeping in my room and now sleeps with his siblings. I am very happy with his progress, and it encouraged me to attend more courses like this." - a Caregiver.
